HISTORY OF THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF AMAZONAS (2001 TO 2025): YESTERDAY-TODAY

Abstract

The Amazon region has an estimated population of over four million people, a result of a complex (and even perverse) process that included the 'participation-presence' of indigenous peoples, Black people, and migrant groups. In this context, education, including higher education, has been characterized more as a privilege than a right. This study aimed to understand and analyze the history (creation, establishment, and development) of the Universidade do Estado do Amazonas (UEA) during its 25 years of existence (2001 to 2025). Its nature was qualitative, engaging in dialogue and approximation with the historical-critical method and documentary research. The data were collected from the General Secretariat and the General Archive of the Universidade do Estado do Amazonas; from the Annals and Synopsis Management, the Minutes Drafting Management, and the Archive Management of the Documentation Directorate of the Assembleia Legislativa do Estado do Amazonas (ALEAM); from the Documentation Management of the Agência de Comunicação do Estado do Amazonas (AGCOM); and from the websites of the Official Press of the State of Amazonas and UEA. We identified that the Universidade do Estado do Amazonas is one of the existing public higher education institutions in the State of Amazonas, and is linked to the State Executive Branch, as well as being the result of a government policy, but that throughout its existence it has sought its consolidation as a state policy. Its mission is to promote the development of the state, to train and educate people to work in production systems, public management, the generation of new technologies, and the valorization of intangible heritage, prioritizing quality of life, citizenship, and the cultural and environmental integrity of the Amazon.
