Epidemics constitute a serious public health problem, especially in view of the increase in dengue cases and their impacts in Brazil. In this context, the Unified Health System (SUS) plays a central role in epidemiological surveillance, disease prevention, immunization, vector control, and the articulation between different levels of health care. However, persistent challenges such as regional inequalities, service overload, and structural limitations require strategic planning, efficient management, and professional qualification to ensure effective responses to health emergencies. The objective of this study was to analyze the strategies adopted by the SUS in epidemiological surveillance and epidemic prevention, evaluating their contribution to reducing disease transmission and protecting the population. This is a systematic literature review, conducted through previously defined stages, including inclusion and exclusion criteria, selection of scientific databases, and analysis of studies addressing SUS actions in coping with epidemics. The results highlight the strategic role of the SUS, with emphasis on Primary Health Care, immunization, vector control, and health education. Despite the advances achieved, challenges related to resource scarcity and service overload persist.
