Mining activity has existed in Mozambique since pre-colonial times, with an economy characterized by the exploitation of basic natural elements, transformed into resources by human action. The discovery of these resources led to the conversion of this wealth into socioeconomic development. For this reason, this study aims to evaluate the potential of mineral resources in the Montepuez district of Mozambique and correlate it with the challenges to their contribution to socioeconomic development. The research was conducted from a perspective that combines quantitative approaches with techniques that also allowed for the acquisition of qualitative dimensions. Data analysis and triangulation were used (qualitative data through content analysis, quantitative data through descriptive analysis to identify patterns and trends in the study, based on a statistical model (SPSS) used to calculate the values of human development indicators). Therefore, it was concluded that, based on the forecast of revenues from mineral resources and a concrete long-term sustainable development plan that harmonizes the mining sector with other sectors of the economy, the presence of mineral resources does not guarantee development unless policies prioritize the protection of individuals and emphasize that true progress is related to improving the quality of life and the application of individual freedoms.
