Bariatric surgery, especially vertical gastrectomy and gastric bypass, has been shown to be effective in treating obesity-associated polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women. The general aim of this study was to map scientific literature on bariatric surgery as an alternative treatment for PCOS. This is an integrative literature review using the PubMed database. The following descriptors were used for the search: “Bariatric surgery”, “Obesity” and “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome”, using the Boolean operator “AND”. The analysis of 17 studies revealed consistent benefits, with a significant reduction in body mass index (BMI), improvement in insulin resistance and normalization of glycemic parameters. It was concluded that bariatric surgery represents a viable and effective therapeutic option for women with PCOS and obesity, although additional prospective and controlled studies are needed to consolidate this evidence and optimize clinical recommendations.
