Abstract

This case report describes the physiotherapy rehabilitation of a 59-year-old patient who underwent left ankle osteosynthesis, aiming to restore joint range of motion, muscle strength, and functional gait. The treatment protocol included early joint mobilization, stretching, progressive strengthening, proprioceptive training, and gait re-education. Range of motion, muscle strength, and periarticular edema were assessed before and after the physiotherapeutic intervention. After eight weeks of treatment, dorsiflexion increased from 10° to 12° and eversion from 13° to 15°. There was also a decrease in edema and an improvement in gait quality, which progressed from antalgic to functional without external support. Muscle strength was maintained at grade 5 in all ankle movements bilaterally, and the patient reported greater confidence performing daily activities. The findings highlight the importance of early and progressive physiotherapy to minimize postoperative complications, restore function, and improve the quality of life. This report contributes to the scientific evidence on the benefits of personalized rehabilitation after ankle osteosynthesis and underscores the positive impact of active patient involvement in the physiotherapy process.
