HOLISTIC AND COMPLEMENTARY STRATEGIES FOR ADHD MANAGEMENT: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Introduction: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Traditional treatments, primarily relying on medication, often face challenges such as side effects and limited efficacy, driving interest in integrative therapeutic approaches. Objective: This review aims to evaluate recent evidence on integrative strategies for managing ADHD. Methods: A systematic review of scientific literature published from 2004 to 2024 was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Scielo databases. Inclusion criteria: Original studies and reviews published in English, Portuguese, or Spanish focusing on integrative interventions for ADHD. Results and Discussion: Elimination diets, omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, and micronutrient-based interventions showed significant promise in alleviating ADHD symptoms. Techniques such as CBT, mindfulness practices, and biofeedback demonstrated benefits in emotional regulation and symptom management. Additionally, regular physical activity and outdoor engagement were linked to improved attention and behavioral outcomes. Combining pharmacological treatments with integrative approaches has proven to be a comprehensive and adaptable method, enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life. Conclusion: Integrative strategies offer promising alternatives, effectively complementing conventional ADHD treatments. Personalized care and continued research are essential to harness the full potential of these interventions, providing a holistic approach to ADHD management.
