Introduction: Children with Special Health Needs (CSHCN) face a variety of limiting or disabling conditions, where these conditions can affect motor, functional, behavioral, emotional and/or developmental aspects, with the demand for care being continuous, temporary or permanent. Nursing professionals need to be ready to welcome these children, including in the context of primary care. Objective: To describe the role of nurses in promoting current nursing practices that are more comprehensive and sensitive to the emotional and social demands involved in the comprehensive care of children with special needs. Methodology: This is a literature review with a descriptive nature and a qualitative approach. Analysis and discussion of results: Therefore, it is up to nurses to promote health education practices that qualify both knowledge and practice, according to the specific needs of each patient. It is clear that it is necessary to expand practical experiences in the training of nurses, as they have a significant role in developing the skills of family caregivers to meet the demands of children during rehabilitation. Conclusion: Health education for nursing professionals is essential to develop skills that enable caregivers/family members to meet the demands of CSHCN. The importance of social support and a support network is recognized as fundamental to improving the quality of life of these children and their families.
