This study investigated how assessment of learning in Portuguese language teaching could contribute to the critical development of students, given that traditional assessment methods tend to be insufficient to develop reflective and analytical skills. The overall objective was to analyze the effectiveness of critical assessment as a tool for developing autonomy and critical thinking in students. The research used bibliographic methodology, focusing on studies and documents on assessment practices in Portuguese language teaching. The results indicated that assessment methods that encourage interpretation, textual production and self-assessment promote participatory and meaningful learning, allowing students to engage and construct knowledge in a reflective manner. The analysis also highlighted the importance of teacher training for the effective implementation of critical assessment practices, since many teachers face barriers related to training and working conditions. It was concluded that critical assessment can transform the teaching process, provided that educational institutions offer adequate support to teachers. The study contributed to the understanding of assessment as a formative process and suggested the need for additional research that explores the impacts of critical assessment methods on students' communicative and argumentative development.
