Nursing care plays an important role in promoting safe surgery, addressing the prevention of adverse events and improving the quality of care. This objective study identifies the main practices required by nurses to ensure surgical safety and discusses the challenges faced in their implementation. The methodology adopted was an integrative literature review, carried out using the SCIELO, MEDLINE/PUBMED and LILACS databases, accessed via VHL. This approach included the collection and comprehensive analysis of relevant studies, contributing to a deeper understanding of nursing practices in promoting surgical safety. The results indicated that the application of the Surgical Safety Checklist, combined with a collaborative environment, can contribute to reducing complications and improving patients' well-being. However, professionals face several obstacles that can result in adverse events and harm the patient's health, such as poor communication, lack of support and punitive culture. The need for investment in training and the construction of a safety culture that involves the entire healthcare team is highlighted to improve surgical results and minimize the risks associated with surgical procedures.
