Introduction: Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder that significantly affects the quality of life and social functioning of individuals. Objective: To investigate and describe nursing care practices aimed at patients with schizophrenia, aiming to promote improved quality of life and effective symptom management, as outlined in the DSM-5. Methodology: This is a literature review research with a qualitative and quantitative approach through data search in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and SCOPUS using terms related to schizophrenia, nursing care and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. Results and Discussion: It was observed that nursing plays a crucial role in the care of patients with schizophrenia, being essential in the administration of medications, in the education of the patient and their families, in the promotion of adherence to treatment and in the monitoring of side effects. Furthermore, it is essential to promote greater integration between different health professionals, develop more effective interventions to improve the quality of life of these patients and seek innovative and personalized care strategies, taking into account the individual needs of each patient. Conclusion: It is necessary to have a multidisciplinary approach in the care of these patients, involving not only nurses, but also psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers, highlighting the importance of humanizing care, respecting patient autonomy and creating a therapeutic and welcoming environment.
