This article aimed to investigate the factors that motivated blood donation practices in the city of Juiz de Fora and its surrounding region, and to identify factors that could contribute to greater recruitment and retention of donors. Additionally, it sought to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on this practice and the epidemiological profile of donors in Juiz de Fora between December 2022 and April 2023. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire for variable analysis. Altruistic motivations predominated, with respondents mostly being men aged 30 to 39, with a high school diploma and a family income of up to 2 minimum wages. The pandemic led to a decrease in donations, but there was not much discrepancy between donors and non-donors in the city. This study contributes to the analysis of blood donors in Juiz de Fora, but further research is needed to increase the number of donors, the frequency of donations, and consequently, the blood bank reserves.
