Bariatric surgery, widely recognized as an effective intervention in the treatment of morbid obesity, has been consolidated as a crucial therapeutic strategy for the management of patients with severe obesity and its associated comorbidities. The postoperative outcomes of this intervention are widely studied, with a particular focus on sustainable weight loss, remission of metabolic diseases and the impact on patients' quality of life. This literature review gathered articles published in the last five years in the PUBMED database aiming to review postoperative outcomes of bariatric surgery, as well as associated complications and impact on patients' quality of life. In conclusion, bariatric surgery offers promising results in the management of morbid obesity and its comorbidities, with a substantial improvement in patients' quality of life. However, associated complications, both in the short and long term, must be carefully monitored and managed to maximize the benefits of this intervention. The importance of a multidisciplinary approach, which includes nutritional, psychological and medical support, is fundamental for long-term success and for continuous improvement in the quality of life of patients undergoing this type of surgery.
