Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with various complications, being a significant risk factor for numerous illnesses. Its incidence and prevalence are on the rise among populations, making it one of the predominant diseases in Brazil and worldwide. Objective: To assess the quality of life and self-care capacity of diabetic patients hospitalized in a University Hospital in the interior of Pernambuco. Methodology: This is an analytical, descriptive study with a quantitative approach, where 38 patients hospitalized during the research were interviewed using a structured sociodemographic questionnaire and two other validated instruments, the Diabetes-39 Questionnaire (D-39) and the Diabetes Self-Care Activities Questionnaire (QAD). Data collection took place from April to July 2023. The data were tabulated and analyzed using the statistical package SPSS version 22.0. For the statistical significance of associations, the data were interpreted through descriptive measures analysis. For these, the calculation of mean and standard deviation was performed. A significance level of 5% and a confidence level of 95% were established. Results and discussion: The findings reaffirmed those of other studies, showing a predominance of females aged 50 and above, leading a sedentary lifestyle with incorrect habits and comorbidities. They were more affected by anxiety and concerns related to the application of the instruments, which aligns with the literature. Conclusion: It is concluded that personal factors affected the quality of life and self-care of these individuals, there was adherence to medication treatment, but resistance to lifestyle changes. Health professionals play a crucial role in promoting effective care to prevent possible complications.
