Abstract

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), represents a global public health challenge. In Brazil, this epidemic is being tackled by the Unified Health System (SUS), with a focus on universal access to antiretroviral treatment and reducing the stigma associated with the disease. This study aims to analyze the impact of the HIV Clinical Protocol and Therapeutic Guidelines (PCDT) on the pediatric population of the Legal Amazon, in order to identify advances, challenges and opportunities for improving health policies in this region. The research seeks to understand the effects of the therapeutic guidelines on the health and well-being of children and adolescents affected by HIV and to relate the number of hospitalizations before and after the publication of the new PCDT. The methodology adopted includes a quantitative approach, combining epidemiological data from 2017 to 2023, extracted from DATASUS, with implementation analyses contained in the PCDT. The results showed a reduction in the number of hospitalizations and deaths over the period evaluated, considering the progress made in implementing the PCDT in the region. It is important to continue efforts to overcome challenges such as regional inequalities, barriers to accessing health services and social stigmatization. Finally, we reiterate the importance of the progress made and the continuing need for more specific and effective strategies in the field of research in order to improve the response to HIV treatment in the Legal Amazon and other geographical regions.
