Abstract

This article highlights the importance of tooth whitening and the challenges related to tooth sensitivity associated with this procedure. Teeth whitening can be carried out using various whitening techniques, some of which were known and practiced since ancient Egypt, such as the use of abrasive agents mixed with vinegar to achieve tooth whitening. Furthermore, it should be noted that the success of these procedures depends on identifying the origin of the color change, which can be extrinsic or intrinsic. Peroxide whitening gels are widely used, but it is important to consider that they can cause tooth sensitivity due to changes in the structure of the enamel. Factors such as tooth cracks, non-carious cervical lesions and the pH of whitening agents also influence sensitivity. Therefore, a complete oral assessment is essential to adapt treatment to each patient's individual needs, ensuring comfort and safety throughout the tooth whitening process.
