Introduction: This abstract discusses the importance of the Heimlich maneuver in pediatric first aid, highlighting its effectiveness in clearing upper airway obstructions in cases of choking. The technique is crucial to prevent serious complications such as hypoxia and cardiopulmonary arrest, especially in young children and infants who are more susceptible to choking. Objective: The objective of this study is to review the existing literature on the application of the Heimlich maneuver, identifying evidence of its effectiveness, recommended training methods, and challenges in implementing this technique in different contexts. Methodology: An integrative literature review was conducted using databases such as MEDLINE, BDENF, and IBECS. Articles published in the last ten years were selected, focusing on studies discussing the application of the Heimlich maneuver in pediatric populations and the impacts of educational programs on first aid. Results and Discussion: The review revealed that the Heimlich maneuver is highly effective when performed by trained individuals, with adaptation of the technique according to the child's age being essential. Training programs have shown to increase confidence and skills among interveners but face challenges such as lack of access to training and myths about emergency procedures. Conclusion: It is concluded that the Heimlich maneuver is fundamental in pediatric first aid, requiring continuous efforts for its dissemination and proper training of parents, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. Investments in health education are necessary to ensure a prompt and effective response to choking incidents, promoting a safer environment for children.
