Methylphenidate hydrochloride, which stimulates the central nervous system (CNS) and acts by releasing dopamine and norepinephrine into the synaptic space. In Brazil, this medication is sold as Ritalin® (Novartis) and Concerta® (JanssenCilag). The legal indications for the use of methylphenidate are children, young people and adults diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in whom the medication improves performance. The 1971 United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances classified methylphenidate as a psychotropic drug with a risk of abuse and dependence, therefore its prescription is controlled. Due to its benefit to cognition, methylphenidate is often used freely and for academic performance. Therefore, the general objective of this research was to discuss the consumption of Ritalin (Methylphenidate Hydrochloride) within university centers, analyzing the risks of its indiscriminate use in students. Methodology: This is a literature review in which the Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Academics databases were used for research. MPH is consumed for its euphoric effects or to improve academic performance. Therefore, the majority of consumers are students, with average or below average academic achievement. It is concluded, therefore, that the research was aimed at the importance of having a health awareness strategy and rational use of this medicine, with the aim of reducing consumption among students and guiding them to appropriate, and not indiscriminate, use.
