Nursing has the Nursing Process (NP) for organizing nursing care, which aims to incorporate the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) method. Caring for hospitalized newborns and children must be even more specific, as their bodies are immature. It is the duty of the team and the nurse to recognize that these patients are developing and growing and to ensure that they do it in the best possible way, based on systematized care. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the perception of nurses and nursing technicians in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care unit about the nursing process, its importance and how it is applied in the sector. This was a qualitative-quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study carried out at a university hospital located in the interior of the state of São Paulo. The main results, 100% of the nurses were unable to say what the phases of the NP were, 67% were unable to differentiate the NP from the SNC, 55% did not carry out the nursing evolution, 67% considered the number of staff in the sector to be insufficient and 33% reported not carrying out the physical examination on all shifts. Regarding the nursing technicians, 57% reported not having studied the NP during the course, 31% associated the term NP with the SNC, 69% considered the NP to be the nursing prescription and 33% pointed to a lack of time to complete the prescriptions. Therefore, can be concluded that there needs to be a discussion among the nursing team about the NP and the roles to be played by each member of the nursing staff. In addition, the importance of a NP without limitations, thus, the need to rethink the use of the pre-prepared SNC in professional practice.
