When considering a sinus lift procedure, a comprehensive preoperative evaluation is crucial to ensure the success and safety of the surgery. The evaluation typically begins with a thorough review of the patient's medical history, which helps the dentist understand any underlying health conditions or medications that may affect the procedure. The aim of this study is to review the maxillary sinus lifting procedure, covering pre-operative assessment, surgical techniques, bone graft materials and possible complications. To achieve the proposed objective, descriptive, exploratory, qualitative research was used. This research was carried out through a literature review, where articles were collected in the databases of Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Public Medline or Publisher Medline (PUBMED) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS ). To carry out the search, we used the descriptors containing the words “Dental implant”, “maxillary sinus”, “maxillary sinus lift” and their correlates in English. The eligibility criteria were freely available articles published between 2018 and 2023 in Portuguese and English, which describe the topic raised. The sinus lift procedure is a complex but effective method for increasing bone volume in the posterior region of the jaw and allowing for the successful placement of dental implants. Preoperative evaluation plays a crucial role in determining the feasibility and success of the procedure, while various surgical techniques offer flexibility based on the patient's individual needs. Despite its effectiveness, potential complications must be considered and managed appropriately to ensure the overall success of the procedure. With advances in technology and materials, sinus lift continues to be a valuable tool in the field of implant dentistry, providing patients with better oral health and function.
