Dental documentation is a set of records that document the care and treatments carried out by the dental surgeon, which includes: clinical records, treatment plans, clinical evolution, complementary exams, prescriptions, certificates and terms of consent. This documentation is essential to guarantee the quality of care, facilitating communication between professionals and serving as legal protection for the dentist and patient. The objective of this work is to analyze, through a literature review, the importance of dental documentation in civil proceedings involving dental surgeons. The research was carried out in the databases “Scielo” (Scientific Electronic Library Online), periodicals Capes, Pub Med and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde using the following descriptors: “Radiography”, legal dentistry”, “civil procedure”. 28 publications were selected that were in line with the chosen theme, with the inclusion criteria being: articles published in full. After reviewing the literature, the importance of dental documentation in processes was confirmed and its rigorous and detailed maintenance is essential to guarantee the integrity of the clinical process, protect all parties involved and guarantee justice in legal disputes.
