Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) involve a series of problems that affect the masticatory system, with significant prevalence and varied causes, including trauma, emotional stress, deep pain and parafunctional habits. TMD is more common in women aged 20 to 40, with varied symptoms such as: headache, ear and neck pain. This work aims to analyze, based on a literature review, the relationship between temporomandibular disorders and psychological factors. The Scielo and Pubmed databases were searched for the following descriptors: Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome, Stress Psychological, Depression and Anxiety. After qualitative analysis, websites, books and articles published between 2013 and 2023 were used. In total, 17 articles, 2 books and 1 website were included in the development of this study. Several studies have demonstrated the correlation between TMD and psychological factors in different populations, including children, adolescents and adults, especially during periods of greater stress, negatively impacting patients' quality of life. More in-depth research should be carried out in order to improve the dentist's approach to accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for patients with TMD.
