Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepnic hypnotic used especially in the short term treatment of insomnia, where it is prescribed for patients with problems initiating and maintaining sleep. This medicine acts on the central nervous system. It is considered a very safe medicine, being the most prescribed in several countries. Zolpidem became one of the most consumed drugs in Brazil in 2020. The objective of this work is to analyze what the drug zolpidem is for, and the harm that indiscriminate use can cause, in addition to identifying how the pharmacist can contribute by informing about the conscious use of it. The methodology used is a bibliographic review of the literature. We can conclude that Zolpidem is a reasonable choice of treatment for sleep disorders, as the drug contributes to the regulation of sleep phases at night, reducing fatigue and daytime mood instability.
