Abstract

Introduction: Dental anxiety or odontophobia is one of the main reasons for avoiding dental care. It can be classified into fear, anxiety, and phobia. High dental anxiety impairs treatment and oral health, potentially influenced by traumatic experiences, socioeconomic factors, and cultural aspects. Objectives: To analyze the prevalence and factors influencing dental anxiety in a dental clinic at a dentistry graduation program. Methods: A descriptive and exploratory study, with a quantitative approach, was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire and the MDAS anxiety scale. Interviews were conducted at a private Higher Education Institution in Teresina, Piauí, Brazil, in 2023. Results: No significant correlations were found between dental anxiety and various factors, such as dental procedures, gender, age, education level, frequency of dental visits, and pre-appointment mood. However, a significant relationship was observed between patients' physical manifestations during treatment and dental anxiety. Conclusion: Demographic factors (gender, age, education level) and dental procedures did not show statistical relevance in anxiety, despite patient reports. Further research is needed to investigate the impact of these factors on dental anxiety.
