Children's adult lives generally require them to leave to study, work, live alone or get married. This separation, after so many years together with parents, can cause sadness and a feeling of emptiness, especially in mothers, which can characterize empty nest syndrome (NVS), which, in turn, can have a major impact on various aspects of life. lives of these mothers. The objective of this article is to discuss the impact of SNV on mothers' emotional health, with an emphasis on the most important factors. The defined methodology was a bibliographical research, of a qualitative nature, in the form of a text review. Empty nest syndrome is recognized by symptoms of depression, such as alcohol consumption and strange behavior, in mothers whose children have left home. Factors such as retirement, family culture and preparation for children's independence also influence. The best recommendation for dealing with this difficult transition phase is to seek professional help. In summary, SNV is less prevalent in cultures where separation from children is common and accepted, but persists in societies where women are mostly responsible for raising children, and can result in feelings of loneliness and depression even after the children leave.
