IMPACT OF SKIN MICROBIOTA ON DERMATOLOGICAL HEALTH

Skin microbiota describes the diverse community of microorganisms that reside on the skin surface, playing crucial roles in homeostasis and skin health. This microbial ecosystem is implicated in several physiological functions, including immune defense, lipid metabolism, and regulation of the inflammatory response. The balance of this microbiota is essential for the integrity of the skin barrier and the prevention of dermatological diseases. Therefore, understanding the impact of the skin microbiota on dermatological health is essential to develop effective therapeutic and preventive strategies. Objective: The objective of this systematic review is to critically analyze the existing literature on the role of the skin microbiota in dermatological health, highlighting its interactions with common skin diseases and advances in understanding this relationship. Methodology: The review followed the PRISMA guidelines. Articles were searched in the PubMed, Scielo and Web of Science databases, published in the last 10 years. The descriptors used included "skin microbiota", "dermatological health", "skin diseases", "microbial interactions" and "microbial therapy". Inclusion criteria: Original studies that investigated the relationship between skin microbiota and dermatological health, published in peer-reviewed journals in the last 10 years. Exclusion criteria: Studies that did not directly address the relationship between skin microbiota and dermatological health, non-systematic reviews and studies with small samples or inappropriate methodologies. Results: 15 studies were selected. The results revealed a significant association between the composition and diversity of the skin microbiota and several dermatological conditions, such as acne, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Additionally, advances in microbial therapy were highlighted, including the use of topical probiotics and microbiome therapies to treat or prevent skin conditions. Conclusion: This review highlights the importance of the skin microbiota in dermatological health and highlights the potential of therapeutic approaches aimed at modulating the microbiota for the treatment of skin diseases. However, more research is needed to fully elucidate the complex interactions between skin microbiota and skin health, as well as to develop more precise and effective therapeutic interventions.
