Objectives: Questionnaires were applied to oncology patients at Hospital Ibiapaba de Barbacena-MG to identify, among gastrointestinal tract cancers, which were the most common signs and symptoms and relate them to their primary site, age, origin, gender and style of the patient's life. Methodology: This was an analytical, cross-sectional study, in which questionnaires were applied on signs and symptoms in patients diagnosed with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, in the oncology department of Hospital Ibiapaba - CEBAMS, in the city of Barbacena, Minas Gerais. Results: 95 volunteers were evaluated, 53% men, 58.95% elderly and 63.16% with a positive family history of the disease. Of the total, 65.2% had bowel cancer, 27.4% stomach cancer and 7.4% esophageal cancer. The most frequent symptoms were weight loss and abdominal pain, present, respectively, in 75.8% and 61% of patients. Specifically related to each tumor site, an association was found between halitosis, reflux, chest pain, hoarseness and difficulty swallowing with esophageal cancer, vomiting with stomach tumor and anal pain and rectal bleeding with intestinal bleeding. Conclusion: The present study identified that among the gastrointestinal tract tumors, the most prevalent is the intestine and males are the most affected. Of all the symptoms questioned in the interview, those that had an established association with a specific location of the cancer stand out and the need to seek medical attention should be reinforced when there is an unexplained clinical change.
