In recent years, in the face of globalization and technological advances, various health policies have been drawn up and the concept of competence has gained prominence in public health. Currently, competence is a fundamental characteristic in business strategy and public health management, since technological advances and competitiveness have required professionals with the ability to perform their duties with high performance in different situations and work environments. We can say that professionals need to have the necessary skills developed in order to be successful in their work in public health (Tilson, 2004). Based on these reflections, this study aims to address the importance of mapping competencies for the strategic management of people in public health. In order to achieve the objectives of this study, a qualitative bibliographic study was carried out analyzing the literature on the subject. A search was carried out in the main scientific journals on the proposed topic. Throughout the development of this research, by means of bibliographic analysis, it was possible to identify the main definitions and challenges related to public health services in Brazil, as well as to understand the main concepts related to competency-based management. This study shows how competency mapping is indispensable in the implementation of the competency-based management model, as well as being an efficient tool for drawing up training plans.
