Gout is an inflammatory and destructive arthritis characterized by the deposition of sodium monourate crystals. This deposition occurs from extracellular fluids saturated with urate (the end product of human purine metabolism). It is worth noting that around 95% of cases occur in male patients between 30 and 60 years of age. Of this statistic, around 40% of cases have a family history of the disease. In females, it is more common after menopause. Given the great importance of the topic, this narrative literature review brought together articles from the main databases in order to point out the main conditions associated with primary and secondary gout. It was concluded that primary gout is related to the inborn error of purine metabolism, while secondary gout may be related to myelolymphoproliferative diseases, hemoglobinopathies, medication use, hyperlipidemias and other diverse health situations.
