When talking about violence, it is necessary to go through the culture and development of society. Thus, the existence of violence against women can be observed, mistakenly stereotyped as being fragile, submissive and without a will of their own. In the 1980s, violence against women gained public attention, previously being an issue avoided and kept private. It was through the insistence and monitoring of the feminist movement that cases of violence against women caused by husbands and ex-husbands began to be exposed. This work seeks to identify what types of violence women suffer, and the importance of talking about it. To achieve the proposed objectives, a bibliographic analysis was used. Google ScholarⓇ was used as the main research source, using the search range in the tool with limited publications made between 1990 and 2023. Violence against women is a serious public health problem, being considered one of the main forms of violation of human rights, interfering with the right to life, health and integrity, which can be understood as any action or conduct based on gender that causes death or inflicts physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering on women, in public spheres or private. Furthermore, it is a reality faced not only in the Brazilian context. The increase in cases of violence against women helps us think about the effectiveness of the investments that societies have been making to tackle this serious social problem. Given this context, in which violence leads to physical and emotional consequences, which can lead to death, Law No. 11,340/2006 stands out, and its update in 2015, which legalizes feminicide as a crime. There was a significant increase in feminicide, 22% and 17% in the increase in calls to 180, reporting violence against women, during the period of social confinement, due to COVID-19. Law No. 11,340/2006 describes the possibility of creating projects aimed at education and rehabilitation of male aggressors. Finally, it should be noted that violence against women is an issue that does not depend on race, creed, ethnicity, social class, as it is present in all spheres of society and, although there have been advances in discussion and confrontation, it remains being a problem.
