Abstract

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric disease that affects children and persists into adulthood. Its characteristics are impulsivity, inattention and hyperactivity. These symptoms directly affect the individual's daily life, which end up resulting in poor hygiene, leading to various oral complications, such as tooth decay. Furthermore, sleep disorders, often present in patients with ADHD, it can trigger bruxism, due to muscle hyperactivity and involuntary movements.  Objective: the present work aims to describe, through a literature review, the main dental management in patients with ADHD, and the main dental complications of these patients. Methodology: to produce this work we used articles, annals, books and magazines that described the disorder and its harmful effects. These articles were obtained through research media, such as: PubMed, Scielo and Scopus, in English and Portuguese publications from the last 10 years. Discussion: Motor difficulties, lack of attention to oral hygiene care, binge eating, parafunctional habits and different dental management are examples of the challenges found in patients with ADHD when faced with dental needs. Conclusion: therefore, it is extremely important that the dentist understands this disorder, its complications and above all, the dental management of these patients.
