HUMAN RIGHTS AND JOURNALISM: A CASE STUDY ON ‘THE CHARMING SOUL OF THE STREETS’ BY JOÃO DO RIO

Abstract

The following work will have Literary Journalism as its main subject. It will be an exploratory research, which will have as its object of study reports produced by João do Rio, in his work ‘A Alma Encantadora das Ruas’. The central proposal will be to analyze three texts from the book, from the perspective of the ‘Seven Pointed Star’. The ‘Star’ was developed by the author Felipe Pena (2008), and aims to identify essential elements present in journalistic-literary narratives.
The objective here is not to verify whether the work carried out by João do Rio fits within the definitions of Literary Journalism, as this is already known. The purpose is to explore the author's texts, analyzing the specificities of the narratives through the 'Star', and in this way, concomitantly, experiment with Pena's (2008) categories, to verify their theoretical validity and, thus, propose them with an analysis technique .
To this end, the work will be divided into three chapters. The first will cover journalism in a comprehensive way, listing topics such as: the definition and function of the activity in society, history and different narratives. In this chapter the main authors that will be used are: Bahia (1990), Marcondes Filho (2001), Pena (2013), Sousa (2008), Traquina (2012).
To better understand the central theme of this work, and based on authors such as Lima (1993), Vilas Boas (2008), Pena (2008), Talese (2004), and others, the second chapter will specifically portray Literary Journalism, reviewing : history, definitions, characteristics, formats and main authors. The third chapter will be dedicated to the analysis of the reports ‘The tattooists’, ‘The dock workers’, and ‘The superior gallery’, originally published between 1904 and 1907, in the newspaper ‘Gazeta de Notícias’ and in the magazine ‘Kosmos’.
This work was motivated by the attempt to understand in a more incisive way about Literary Journalism and the way in which it is developed, since the 'genre' is little studied in undergraduate studies, and its importance for professionals who decide to overcome the barriers of journalism is notable. conventional and venture into a hybrid, dynamic and creative narrative.
