Exogenous testosterone (synthetic) was created with a view to medicinal use, to treat pathologies that result in a decline in the natural production of the hormone and aging itself, with the replacement of the synthetic hormone being the best possibility of improving the health and quality of life of the patient, however, its use has become common in the search for quick aesthetic results by bodybuilding practitioners, through self-medication and application without medical recommendation and follow-up. The article aims to address the action of exogenous testosterone in the body, to present the main positive and negative effects (advantages and disadvantages) of using this hormone for young men and women who practice bodybuilding. Through a literature review, it was possible to conclude that although the effects on increasing muscle volume and strength are evident, it is considered that synthetic testosterone should be better studied regarding its use by young adult patients (between 18 and 34 years of age ), of both sexes, therefore, the use of hormone therapy in elderly men should be restricted, aiming at well-being, energy and libido. The indiscriminate use of supraphysiological doses should be completely avoided in view of the risk of cardiovascular toxicity and psychic and behavioral effects of this drug, and it is important to work to raise awareness and prevent their use through health education, which is prohibited by the (World Health Organization) and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) due to the risk of irreversible damage to health as well as death in more severe cases.
