Binge eating is an eating disorder characterized by excessive and uncontrolled food intake, even when there is no physical hunger. This behavior leads to great emotional discomfort, feelings of guilt and shame, affecting the individual's physical and mental health. It is estimated that binge eating affects around 2% of the world's population, being more common in women and people experiencing stress or anxiety. Given this scenario, the role of the nutritionist in combating binge eating is fundamental. Nutrition professionals have in-depth knowledge of the nutritional and physiological aspects of food, which gives them the ability to take a scientific approach to treating this disorder. Unlike other therapeutic approaches, the nutritionist has the expertise in adapting the diet of the individual affected by binge eating, taking into account both emotional factors and nutritional and physiological aspects. In this way, the professional acts as a facilitator in the process of changing eating habits, helping to promote a more balanced and healthy relationship with food. However, despite the importance of the nutritionist's role in combating binge eating, there is still a lack of scientific studies that address this issue specifically. It is therefore necessary to deepen knowledge about the strategies used by nutritionists in this context, as well as their results in the treatment of binge eating. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the nutritionist's role in combating binge eating, taking into account a scientific approach. To this end, scientific studies published in recent decades that address the topic will be reviewed, analyzing the strategies used by nutritionists, their benefits and limitations in the treatment of this disorder.
