In Brazil, in 2005, the prevalence of clefts was one in every 650 individuals, that is, 1.53 cases per 1000 live births. While, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, there were 318,667 live births, a prevalence of 0.49 cases/1,000 live births. The research aims to verify the prevalence of oral clefts in children born between 2006 and 2020 in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, and compare it with the last study. A cross-sectional study was carried out with data obtained from the Live Births Information System (SINASC) made available by the Health Surveillance Secretariat of the Ministry of Health. The mother's age group, the child's gender and ethnicity were described. During this period, the number of live births in the State was 708,920, of which 349 had some type of cleft lip and/or palate, representing a prevalence of 0.49 cases/1000 live births. A higher prevalence was found in the age group of mothers from 45 to 49 years old (0.95 cases/1000 live births). Oral clefts were more prevalent in males (0.57 cases/1000 live births) and in the mixed race (0.54 cases/1000 live births). It was found that the prevalence remained the same, even with the longer period of time. It is suggested to carry out research through the databases of the municipal health departments for greater reliability. Therefore, it is extremely important to emphasize care for these patients, the importance of a multidisciplinary team and the implementation of public policies in the state, since there are many patients with cleft lip and palate present in the state.
