INTRODUCTION: Heart Failure (HF) has a high prevalence and incidence in Brazil, respectively with 2 million patients affected by the syndrome and with approximately 250.000 new cases every year. Thus, the objective of the present work is to describe, qualitatively and quantitatively, the epidemiological profile of HF in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the year 2021. METHODS: This is an observational and ecological study, with epidemiological analysis and descriptive statistics, using the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH-SUS), from the Ministry of Health, as the research database. The filters used for the research were the city of admission, gender and age group, grouping patients according to the highest prevalence in the year surveyed for each of the filters used. As this is a study with public data, analysis by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) was waived. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: With the data obtained, a total rate of hospitalizations due to HF was observed in the analyzed municipality of 27.2 per 100,000 inhabitants. When analyzed by gender, females had a total rate of 23.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, while males had a total rate of hospitalizations for HF of 31.1 per 100,000 inhabitants. CONCLUSION: The total number of hospitalizations due to HF has grown throughout Brazil in recent years. With the results, it is concluded that men have a higher rate of hospitalizations for HF in the municipality analyzed, varying according to the age group. New studies are needed to better understand the etiological factors that cause a higher rate of hospitalizations for HF in men, not only in the municipality analyzed, but in Brazil as a whole.
