Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and body posture. Method: The databases used were PubMed/MEDLINE and VHL. The descriptors controlled in DeSC and MeSH were: Postural Balance, Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome, combined by the Boolean operator “AND”. Articles published in the last six years, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, that addressed the variables defined by the PICO strategy (Population: Individuals with TMD; Intervention: TMD treatment; “Outcomes”: Improved body posture) were included. The following were excluded: narrative literature reviews, clinical case reports, duplicates and research that did not address the variables under study. The selection of articles was based on reading the titles and abstracts. Results: The research resulted in 07 studies selected to compose the theoretical framework, case-control studies were the most prevalent. Most studies (04 articles) were significantly modified between TMD and changes in body posture, 03 studies did not request any important changes between both conditions, however, two of them evaluated only TMD in people with articular disk displacement. Thus, postural changes according to the type of TMD represent an important factor to be evaluated more specifically. Conclusion: TMD showed a significant association with changes in body balance in 57.14% of the studies evaluated in this review, although the evidence is still insufficient to support a causal relationship.
