The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on elective surgery bookings worldwide. The aim of this article is to review the impacts of this situation on scheduling elective surgeries and the consequences for patients and the health system. During the pandemic, there was a need to prioritize medical resources to combat the virus, which resulted in the postponement and cancellation of many elective surgeries. This had a direct impact on patients' health, with potential worsening of medical conditions and decreased quality of life. In addition, patients also faced emotional challenges such as anxiety and uncertainty regarding their treatment. The health system as a whole has also been overloaded, with the need to reallocate resources to care for patients with COVID-19. This has led to delays in elective surgeries, difficulties in managing waiting lists and an increase in pent-up demand. Given this scenario, the need to reorganize medical resources, establish clear prioritization criteria, and adopt appropriate safety measures to ensure continuity and safe resumption of elective surgeries became evident. In addition, the use of technologies, such as telemedicine, proved to be essential for monitoring patients and reducing face-to-face contact. Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the importance of advance planning, collaboration among healthcare professionals, and adaptability to changing circumstances. It is recommended that health systems develop recovery strategies to meet pent-up demand and be prepared for future health crises. In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on elective surgery bookings, with consequences for the health of patients and the organization of the healthcare system. It is essential to learn from this experience and implement measures that guarantee adequate access to elective surgeries, even in crisis situations.
