This literature review aimed to gather up-to-date information on temporomandibular disorders (TMD), a common condition that affects the temporomandibular joint and related muscles. Studies published in the last 10 years on the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis and treatment of TMD were examined. The results of the review showed that TMD is a multifactorial condition that mainly affects women aged 20 to 50 years. Causes include physical, psychological and environmental factors. The diagnosis of TMD involves a multidisciplinary approach, including clinical examination, medical and dental history, imaging studies and mandibular function tests. TMD treatment is based on the underlying causes and may include behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, physical and dental therapy, use of protective devices, and surgery in severe cases. The use of occlusal stabilizers has been widely used, but their effectiveness is still controversial. In conclusion, TMD is a complex condition that requires an interdisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment. Early identification and adequate treatment can prevent disease progression and improve patients' quality of life.
