Abstract

Summary: The improper disposal of medications poses a serious public health risk, contributing to inappropriate self-medication, poisoning, microbial resistance, and unequal access to treatment. The presence of expired drugs in households increases the vulnerability of at-risk groups such as children and the elderly, while also hindering charitable redistribution initiatives. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Franca (São Paulo, Brazil) through the “Hora do Tchau” campaign, which collected expired and reusable medications. The campaign was promoted via social media and educational strategies to encourage proper disposal and the donation of viable drugs. Collected items were sorted, discarded, or donated to a philanthropic organization. Results: A total of 10,249.1 grams of medications were collected, of which 66% were expired. The remaining 34% were still valid and suitable for redistribution to vulnerable populations. The campaign also revealed that 50% of the population disposes of medications improperly, highlighting the need for greater public awareness. The initiative generated 4,787 digital interactions, enhancing social consciousness. Conclusion: The study underscores the urgent need for more effective public policies to regulate medication disposal and promote the redistribution of valid drugs, thereby reducing waste and improving equitable access to healthcare. The next recommended step is to expand the project in collaboration with healthcare institutions to implement more structured actions that mitigate the social impacts of improper drug disposal.
