SYSTEMIC ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION: TREATMENT ADHERENCE AND CLINICAL CONTROL

Abstract

Systemic arterial hypertension is a major chronic condition associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and remains a significant public health issue. Although effective pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies exist, a substantial proportion of hypertensive individuals fail to achieve adequate blood pressure control, with treatment adherence being a key factor influencing therapeutic effectiveness. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between adherence to hypertension treatment and clinical control, considering the primary determinants of non-adherence, its impact on clinical outcomes, and contemporary strategies designed to improve the continuity of care. A narrative literature review was conducted, prioritizing publications from 2021 to 2026 and including national and international guidelines, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, as well as observational and intervention studies. The study concludes that adherence must be incorporated as a central component of hypertension management through an individualized, longitudinal, and patient-centered approach.
