Abstract

This study offers a critical analysis of the film ‘Baby’, directed by Marcelo Caetano, focusing on the affective, sexual, and social experiences of LGBTQIAPN+ characters in São Paulo’s urban context. The narrative follows Wellington, a young man recently released from a juvenile detention center, and Ronaldo, a male sex worker with whom he forms a relationship defined by affection, desire, conflict, and protection. The analysis highlights the support networks the characters build and how individuals are shaped by markers of sexuality, gender identity, race, and social class. Drawing on Queer Theory and discussions of heteronormativity, the study examines the representation of individuals who diverge from gender and sexual norms—particularly those facing marginalization, violence, and social vulnerability. It also addresses issues such as prostitution, drug use, sex between men, and chemsex, highlighting their intersections with human rights and public health. The study argues that, while the film helps make frequently marginalized LGBTQIAPN+ experiences visible, its portrayal may reinforce associations between sexual dissidence, illicit activity, and vulnerability. Finally, it advocates broadening cinematic representations of LGBTQIAPN+ people to reflect their diversity and presence across various social spaces.
