THE ROLE OF NURSING IN THE MANAGEMENT OF NEOPLASTIC WOUNDS IN PALLIATIVE CARE PATIENTS: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Neoplastic lesions have a major impact on the patient’s life, since in addition to causing bodily deformities, they can also trigger various complications such as infections, myoma, and fistulas, as well as lead to the development of psychological problems and changes in the patient’s social interactions. According to the World Health Organization, palliative care is a way to provide comfort and quality of life to patients in palliative situations, seeking ways to prevent and relieve suffering so that the patient may feel comfort and dignity. This is an integrative literature review conducted through bibliographic research, using databases such as the Virtual Library of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and related databases. Twenty studies related to the topic, published between 2020 and 2025, were selected. The results indicated that care for neoplastic lesions consists of specific practices, often involving palliative care, aiming to alleviate symptoms and signs when the progression of the disease no longer allows for a cure, seeking to provide better quality of life and comfort to the patient. It is concluded that nursing plays an essential role in the care and treatment of these lesions, since wound management must be performed properly, paying attention to the patient’s needs and the type of lesion presented.
