BENZODIAZEPINES: TOXIC EFFECTS AND THEIR COMPLICATIONS IN SOCIETY

Abstract

 Benzodiazepines constitute a class of widely prescribed drugs for the treatment of disorders such as anxiety, insomnia, epilepsy, and alcohol withdrawal, primarily acting as modulators of the GABAergic system. Despite their superior safety profile compared to barbiturates, prolonged use is associated with significant risks, including dependence, cognitive impairment, and difficulties in discontinuing therapy. In Brazil, there is a high consumption of these substances, increasing concern about public health problems related to self-medication and dependence. Understanding the mechanisms of action and the inherent risks of benzodiazepine use is fundamental to promoting better clinical practices and guiding collective health actions.
