THE USE OF BENZODIAZEPINES IN ELDERLY PATIENTS WITH INSOMNIA

Abstract

With the increase in longevity in Brazil, it becomes necessary to evaluate the conditions involved in the aging process and the challenges arising from age. Aging brings with it many physiological, motor, and psychological changes, medical conditions, health problems, among others. This article will present a literature review of the use of benzodiazepines for the treatment of insomnia in the elderly, their indications and contraindications, precautions regarding drug interactions and their adverse effects. It will also discuss the necessary partnerships for improving the quality of life in old age, aiming to present relevant information about psychotropic drugs and their interactions with other medications. A meticulous evaluation of prescription is necessary due to the risks involved in combining appropriate and inappropriate medications, the environment in which the elderly person lives, and the risks of prolonged medication use. Therefore, this topic becomes of paramount importance for the community and healthcare professionals.
