PROFILE OF BELL'S PALSY PATIENTS ATTENDED AT A DENTAL SPECIALTY CENTER IN JUAZEIRO, BAHIA, BRAZIL, BETWEEN 2021 AND 2024

Abstract

Bell’s palsy is a neurological disorder characterized by the sudden onset of unilateral facial muscle weakness or paralysis, typically of idiopathic etiology. This condition can substantially affect the quality of life of those affected. The present study aimed to characterize the demographic profile of patients diagnosed with Bell’s palsy who received care at the Centro de Especialidades Odontológicas (CEO) in Juazeiro, Bahia, between 2021 and 2024. An analytical, cross-sectional design was employed, based on the review of epidemiological and administrative records containing demographic information, including age and sex. A total of five patients were treated during the study period. Of these, 60% were female and 40% were male, suggesting a higher prevalence of the condition among women. Regarding age distribution, 60% of patients were aged between 25 and 50 years, whereas 40% were over 50 years old. Considering the significant functional and psychosocial impacts associated with Bell’s palsy, this study highlights the necessity of an interdisciplinary treatment approach. Integrating multiple healthcare professionals may enhance the effectiveness and humanization of care, thereby improving patient outcomes.
