CLINICAL MANAGEMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH ENAMEL HYPOMINERALIZATION

Abstract

Hypomineralization is a developmental defect of the enamel caused by injuries occurring in the prenatal, perinatal and postnatal periods, configuring a complicated condition for both the affected patients and the dentist. The present study aims to perform a literature review on the clinical management of children and adolescents with enamel hypomineralization, considering current diagnostic practices and available treatment options. The bibliographic survey was carried out in the PubMed, SCIELO and Virtual Health Search databases. The study indicates that enamel hypomineralization has significant impacts on the quality of life of patients and, although it is commonly detected in permanent molars and incisors, there is an association with affected deciduous molars and canines. Therefore, it is concluded that early diagnosis of these anomalies increases the success of preventing the deleterious consequences on the affected teeth.
