HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF THE RAILWAY SECTOR IN BRAZIL

Abstract

This article provides a historical overview of the railway sector in Brazil, from the emergence of the first railways during the Imperial period to the enactment of the 1988 Constitution. It analyzes the privatization of railway networks in the 1990s, focusing on the concessions granted. Finally, it discusses the regulation of Brazilian railways over nearly thirty years of privatization, culminating in the introduction of Law No. 14.273, which establishes new regulatory frameworks for the sector.
