TRANSTROCHANTERIC FRACTURE: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Abstract

Transtrochanteric femoral fractures represent a significant challenge in orthopedic practice, especially among the elderly population. This integrative review aimed to summarize the current knowledge on surgical and rehabilitation approaches for the treatment of these fractures. The analysis of different fixation techniques, such as the Dynamic Hip Screw (DHS) and the Proximal Femoral Nail (PFN), revealed that PFN offers significant advantages in terms of stability and functional recovery, especially in unstable fractures. Furthermore, the importance of early and personalized rehabilitation protocols was highlighted, proving to be crucial for functional recovery and the reduction of secondary complications. The review also emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary approach and effective management of osteoporosis to prevent subsequent fractures. Despite promising technological advances, such as image-assisted surgical navigation, more research is needed to validate these methods and standardize clinical practices. It is concluded that although advances in surgical techniques and rehabilitation strategies have improved clinical outcomes, the high incidence of complications and variability in clinical practice indicate the need for further research and standardization.
