THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERIODONTAL AND PERI-IMPLANT DISEASE

Abstract

The relationship between periodontal and peri-implant disease is a topic of great relevance in the field of dentistry, as both conditions share similarities in their etiology, pathogenesis and risk factors. This study explores the interconnection between these two diseases, highlighting their clinical and therapeutic implications. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting tissues of teeth, while peri-implant disease is a similar condition that occurs around dental implants. Both are triggered by the presence of dental biofilm, leading to gingival inflammation and subsequent loss of supporting tissue. Therefore, this work aims to deepen knowledge about the interaction between periodontal disease and peri-implant health, exploring the pathophysiological mechanisms involved and prevention and treatment strategies. Through critical analysis of scientific literature and clinical cases, we hope to contribute to the improvement of clinical management protocols and the promotion of better long-term results in oral rehabilitation with dental implants.
