Abstract

Introduction: The antidiabetic activity of medicinal plants can be evidenced due to several classes of metabolites among which we can mention the compounds glycosides, alkaloids, terpenes, flavonoids, carotenoids. These compounds are believed to be responsible for elevating insulin production and allowing effective treatment. Objective: to review the efficiency of the treatment of diabetes using plants belonging to the genus Syzygium. Methodology: This is a systematic and integrative review carried out through the collection of data and the deepening on the subject, having been carried out through the use of Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS): Diabetes; Medicinal plants; Syzygium. Results and Discussion: The pre-clinical studies carried out showed low antidiabetic activity in tested diabetic rats, having been proven by means of comparison before and after application of Syzygium cumini extract, in addition to plants tested for the control of glycemic indexes, only Syzygium samaranguense proved to be effective in the treatment of hyperglycemia in hyperglycemic mice induced by glucose and this observed in the treatment. Conclusion: This study found that plants of the genus Syzygium have wide uses, among which the use for antidiabetic activity stands out, so it is concluded that this botanical genus is promising in the discovery of new alternative sources for the control and treatment of diabetes.
